Max Space builds expandable space habitats for orbit, the Moon, and Mars
Max Space develops expandable habitats that launch compactly and expand once deployed, achieving up to 20 times their packed volume. A 350 cubic meter habitat can reach orbit on a single Falcon 9. The company was founded in 2023 by CEO Saleem Miyan, Chairman Aaron Kemmer, and CTO Maxim de Jong. Kemmer co-founded Made in Space, which was acquired by Redwire. De Jong had direct involvement in designing and building all three expandable habitats that have flown in space, including BEAM, which remains attached to the International Space Station. Max Space emerged from stealth in April 2024 with its module technology, initially positioning it for sale to other station developers and for uses like propellant depots. The company later advanced its own station concept, Thunderbird Station, a single large module designed to expand to 350 cubic meters and support four people continuously, with two docking ports. Former NASA astronaut Nicole Stott serves as lead astronaut on the project. The habitats are designed to scale across Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars for both station and surface applications.
