Swarm Technologies built a constellation of tiny SpaceBEE satellites to deliver low-cost, two-way IoT connectivity
Swarm Technologies was founded in 2016 by Sara Spangelo and Ben Longmier to connect remote IoT devices using a store-and-forward satellite network where terrestrial coverage doesn't reach. The company designed the SpaceBEE, a 0.25U pico-satellite measuring roughly 11 by 11 by 2.8 centimeters, making them among the smallest commercially operational two-way communications satellites ever flown. Ground-side, customers embedded a low-power Swarm Tile modem into their hardware to send and receive data through the constellation, targeting use cases in maritime shipping, agriculture, energy, and asset tracking. SpaceX acquired Swarm in August 2021. The VHF store-and-forward service was later sunsetted, with commercial service ending in March 2025, as the technology transitioned toward integration with SpaceX's broader satellite infrastructure.
