Avio designs, manufactures, and integrates space launch vehicles and propulsion systems. The company serves as the industrial prime contractor for the European Space Agency's Vega family of small-lift launchers, with Vega C capable of delivering up to 2,300 kg to low Earth orbit. Avio produces the P120C solid rocket motor, which functions as both the Vega C first stage and the strap-on booster for the Ariane 6 heavy-lift launcher, through its Europropulsion joint venture with ArianeGroup. The company also manufactures Zefiro solid rocket motors, AVUM upper stages, and liquid oxygen turbopumps for the Vulcain 2 and VINCI engines.
Avio is developing the Vega E next-generation launcher featuring the M10 liquid oxygen/methane cryogenic engine, with a maiden flight targeted for 2028. The company also serves as prime contractor for the Space Rider reusable unmanned orbital platform. Beyond launch vehicles, Avio produces solid-propellant rocket motors for defense programs including the Aster 30 and CAMM-ER air defense missiles under contract to MBDA. Founded in 1912 and headquartered in Colleferro, Italy, the company operates facilities across Italy and at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou. Avio is publicly traded on the Milan Stock Exchange and reported FY 2024 revenues of EUR 441 million with a backlog of EUR 1.7 billion.
