Lacuna Space
Operates a low-Earth orbit satellite network providing direct-to-device IoT connectivity for remote sensors using its proprietary LoneWhisper protocol based on LoRaWAN
Lacuna Space operates a direct-to-satellite IoT connectivity network, enabling battery-powered sensors in remote locations to transmit small data messages via low-Earth orbit cubesats. The company's proprietary LoneWhisper technology is built on the LoRaWAN protocol, allowing devices to operate for up to five years on a single battery without cellular coverage or mains power. Lacuna serves customers in smart agriculture, environmental monitoring, utility metering, and marine applications. Founded in 2016 under ESA's Business Incubator at Harwell, the company has received over €20 million in investment co-funded by the UK Space Agency and ESA, and contracted Spire Global to build and operate six dedicated IoT constellation satellites.
