Orbcomm
Second-generation Orbcomm LEO satellite constellation for M2M/IoT communications and AIS vessel tracking
Orbcomm OG2 is a constellation of 18 low Earth orbit satellites built by Sierra Nevada Corporation, with communications payloads developed by Argon ST, contracted in May 2008 for $117 million. Operating at approximately 750 km altitude, the satellites provide two-way M2M and IoT data communications with increased subscriber capacity and higher data speeds compared to the first-generation constellation. Each satellite carries an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, enabling vessel tracking services marketed to coast guards, government agencies, and private logistics and security companies. The constellation was launched in two batches aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets, with 18 satellites built and launched, of which 12 remain operational.
