Umbra

Umbra designs, builds, and operates a constellation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites that deliver imagery at resolutions as fine as 16 centimeters. The company's core technology is a patented, deployable antenna that stows in an ESPA-class volume for launch and expands to approximately 16 square meters once on orbit. Umbra operates the Canopy platform, a direct-to-tasking web interface and API that enables customers to search, task, and manage satellite data autonomously. The constellation operates in low Earth orbit and supports multiple imaging modes, including Dwell, Spotlight, Stripmap, Mosaic, and Scan, to provide all-weather, day-and-night geospatial intelligence.

Beyond data services, Umbra operates a Space Systems division that manufactures and sells flight-proven spacecraft components. Its hardware catalog includes power systems, battery modules, solar arrays, reaction wheels, magnetorquers, and S-band radios. The company serves a diverse range of customers, including the National Reconnaissance Office, U.S. Space Force, and Air Force Research Laboratory, as well as commercial enterprises in the remote sensing and infrastructure monitoring sectors. Umbra also maintains an open data program to support researchers with high-resolution radar datasets.
