CubeSat is a standardized satellite form factor defined in units of 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm (1U). Common sizes are 1U, 3U, 6U, and 12U. The standardization is in the deployer interface (the P-POD and its descendants), so any compliant CubeSat can ride along on any compliant launch.
CubeSats brought the cost of a basic space mission down to seven figures or lower, opening space to universities, startups, and small government programs. They're also the gateway form factor for entire commercial constellations — Planet's Doves are 3U CubeSats.

So far we’ve only been able to do so by building giant vats of water far underground with hundreds of photodetectors watching for brief flashes of light.
