About
The European Space Agency is an intergovernmental organization of 23 member states that coordinates and funds Europe's civil space programs. ESA develops and operates satellites for Earth observation through the Copernicus Sentinel fleet, runs the Galileo satellite navigation system, and manages telecommunications programs through its ARTES framework. In science, ESA operates flagship missions including the James Webb Space Telescope (with NASA), the Juice Jupiter mission, Euclid for dark energy research, Solar Orbiter, and BepiColombo at Mercury. ESA oversees Europe's launch vehicle programs, including Ariane 6 and Vega-C, launched from its spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The agency contributes the service module for NASA's Orion spacecraft and participates in the Lunar Gateway program. ESA maintains major technical centers across Europe: ESTEC in Noordwijk for engineering and testing, ESOC in Darmstadt for mission operations, ESRIN in Frascati for Earth observation data, and EAC in Cologne for astronaut training. The agency's space safety program includes planetary defense through the Hera mission and space debris monitoring.
