SSO

Sun-Synchronous Orbit ORBIT 67 in index

A near-polar LEO inclined so the satellite passes over each part of Earth at the same local solar time every orbit.

DEFINITION

Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO) is a near-polar Low Earth Orbit (typically 600–800 km, inclined ~97–98°) where the orbital plane precesses in sync with Earth's motion around the Sun. A satellite in SSO crosses every point at the same local solar time on each pass, producing consistent illumination.

WHY IT MATTERS

SSO is the default for Earth observation. Consistent lighting makes change detection, classification, and time-series imagery viable. Most commercial EO constellations (Planet, BlackSky, ICEYE, Capella) live here.

WHERE YOU'LL SEE IT
  • Optical Earth imaging (Planet, Maxar)
  • Synthetic aperture radar (Capella, ICEYE, Umbra)
  • Multispectral and hyperspectral imaging
