LEO

Low Earth Orbit ORBIT 194 in index

Orbits below roughly 2,000 km altitude; where most communications, Earth-observation, and human spaceflight occur.

DEFINITION

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) covers altitudes from about 160 km up to 2,000 km. Spacecraft in LEO complete an orbit in roughly 90 minutes and travel at ~7.8 km/s. Most modern satellite constellations — Starlink, OneWeb, Planet, and Iridium — operate in LEO because of lower launch cost, lower latency, and the ability to image or communicate with high resolution.

WHY IT MATTERS

LEO is the dominant orbital regime of the modern space economy. Practically every commercial broadband constellation and high-resolution imaging fleet is in LEO, and the falling cost-per-kg-to-LEO is the single biggest driver of the industry's growth curve.

WHERE YOU'LL SEE IT
  • Broadband internet constellations (Starlink, OneWeb, Kuiper)
  • High-resolution Earth observation (Planet, Maxar, BlackSky)
  • Human spaceflight (ISS at ~400 km, Tiangong, Polaris)
  • Synthetic aperture radar (Capella, ICEYE, Umbra)
